Middle school football at Dirigo and Mountain Valley this school year will become part of a pilot program offered through the successful Area Youth Football (AYF) program.
The RSU 10 school board gave unanimous approval of the proposal at their meeting on Monday. The recent approval of the 2014-15 school budget included a reduction of $150,000 in afterschool activities, which included the expensive middle school football programs, whose coaching staffs alone were paid a combined $12,000.
To that end, Supt. Craig King and athletic directors worked with the volunteers of AYF, which has provided football in the area for grades 2-6 for 30 years, to come up with a plan to expand AYF to continue to provide football for middle school athletes.
With the addition of middle school football, AYF decided to form a seven-member board to run the expanded AYF, which will include a Facebook page to keep people updated.
Here, AYF President Jeff Gilbert talks about the program.
